ELYRIA, OH - Officer Gage Hume from the Elyria Police Department went on an information call in reference to a harassment. While he was on the call he spoke to the reporter’s 16 year old son Malachi. Officer Hume told TMC NEWS, “I asked him if there was anything I could do for him personally before I left. After hearing his story and about his home life, he asked me if I could help him fix his broken PlayStation. I told him I was clueless and wouldn’t even know where to start.”
Malachi told Officer Hume that he loved their game console and plays it all the time with his siblings. Officer Hume was so impressed by Malachi and how he interacted with his siblings. Malachi also had taken on the role of having to take care of his family because his father was deceased and his mother was terminally ill.
TMC NEWS reported that after the call Officer Hume called his wife and both of them agreed on what he had to do next.
A short time later Officer Hume returned to Malachi’s home with a new PlayStation Pro and a gift card for a new game.
Officer Hume said, “The feeling I had as I handed it to him, watching his eyes water up – that was priceless. If I could have given him more, I would have.
Malachi told Officer Hume that he wants to join the military one day so Officer Hume also presented him with an Elyria Police Department Challenge Coin.
In the near future Officer Hume will be leaving the Elyria Police Department to start a new adventure in Florida. Malachi told TMC NEWS, “He’s a cool guy who cares about me and my family, I’m sorry he’s leaving the area.”
TMC NEWS asked Malachi, “If you had to return one thing to Officer Hume, the PlayStation or the Challenge Coin, which would it be? Without a moment of hesitation Malachi said, “The PlayStation, the Challenge Coin is too special to me to give back.”
A GoFundMe page has been set up for Malachi and his family to help them with their struggles and Malachi’s mother’s medical bills.
Thank you Officer Hume for being a true hero and thank you Malachi for being an amazing son, brother, and person.
